What is GOTS certification?

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is widely regarded as the gold standard for organic textiles. It is a comprehensive certification that covers the entire supply chain, from the harvesting of raw materials through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing all the way to labeling. For a product to carry the GOTS label, it must contain at least 70% certified organic natural fibers, and products labeled 'organic' must contain at least 95%.

GOTS goes far beyond just the fiber content. It sets strict criteria for every stage of processing, including spinning, knitting, weaving, dyeing, and finishing. All chemical inputs such as dyes and auxiliaries must meet specific environmental and toxicological standards. The certification also requires compliance with social criteria based on International Labour Organization conventions, covering fair wages, safe working conditions, and the prohibition of child labor. Facilities are audited annually by independent, accredited certification bodies.

When you see the GOTS label on products featured on ONDU, you can trust that the garment has been verified at every step. Brands like Mate the Label and Organic Basics hold GOTS certifications for many of their products, giving you confidence that your purchase supports genuinely organic, ethically produced clothing rather than vague, unverified sustainability claims.
