Sustainability

What sustainable fabric certifications should I look for?

Navigating the landscape of textile certifications can be overwhelming, but a few key certifications reliably indicate genuine sustainability commitments. GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) is the gold standard for organic textiles, covering the entire supply chain from raw material to finished product. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 tests for harmful substances in finished textiles, ensuring the product is safe for human use. The FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification applies to wood-based fibers like Tencel and modal, verifying responsible forest management.

Beyond these core certifications, several others offer valuable assurances. The Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) ensures humane treatment of sheep and sustainable land management. Fair Trade certification addresses social sustainability by guaranteeing fair wages and safe working conditions. Bluesign certification focuses on eliminating harmful substances from the manufacturing process and reducing environmental impact at every stage of production. The Cradle to Cradle certification evaluates products across five categories including material health, circularity, and social fairness.

At ONDU, we use these certifications as key criteria when selecting brands for our platform. When you shop with us, you will find products from brands like Organic Basics (GOTS, OEKO-TEX), Tentree (FSC, B Corp), and Icebreaker (RWS, Bluesign) that hold meaningful certifications rather than relying on vague marketing claims. We recommend looking for at least one recognized third-party certification on any garment marketed as sustainable.
