What is Tencel?
Tencel is a branded name owned by the Austrian company Lenzing AG for their lyocell and modal fibers. The most common variant, Tencel lyocell, is made from sustainably harvested wood pulp — typically eucalyptus, beech, or spruce — using a closed-loop production process that recovers over 99% of the solvents used. The result is a silky-smooth, biodegradable fiber that rivals synthetic fabrics in performance.
Tencel is prized for its moisture management, breathability, and softness. It wicks moisture 50% more effectively than cotton, naturally inhibits bacterial growth (which means less odor), and feels cool against the skin. These properties make it an exceptional choice for activewear, sleepwear, and any garment worn close to the body.
At ONDU, we feature Tencel prominently across our activewear curation. Brands like Reprise Activewear build their entire line from 100% Tencel lyocell, while Boldwill and Organic Basics use it as a core performance fabric. If you are looking for plant-based activewear that performs without plastic, Tencel is the gold standard.
