What is circular fashion?
Circular fashion is a systemic approach to the design, production, and consumption of clothing that aims to eliminate waste and keep materials in use for as long as possible. Unlike the traditional linear model of take-make-dispose, circular fashion envisions a closed loop where garments are designed for durability, repairability, and eventual recycling or composting. The concept draws from the broader circular economy framework and applies it specifically to the unique challenges of the textile industry.
Key principles of circular fashion include designing out waste from the beginning by using mono-materials that can be easily recycled, extending garment life through quality construction and repair services, and creating systems for collecting and processing end-of-life textiles. Some brands are pioneering take-back programs where customers return worn garments to be broken down and remanufactured into new products. Others focus on designing garments from biodegradable natural fibers that can be safely composted at end of life.
ONDU supports circular fashion by curating brands that design for longevity and use materials compatible with circular systems. Pangaia invests heavily in material innovation including biodegradable and recyclable fibers. Allbirds designs products with minimal material complexity to facilitate end-of-life processing. By choosing well-made natural-fiber garments from brands with circular commitments, you participate in shifting the fashion industry away from disposability and toward a regenerative model.
