Are Tencel sheets healthier than cotton sheets?

Both Tencel and organic cotton sheets are excellent choices for health, and each offers distinct advantages. Tencel sheets are naturally smoother than cotton at comparable thread counts, reducing friction against skin and hair. Tencel's cellulose structure provides superior moisture management, absorbing 50% more moisture than cotton, which keeps the sleep surface drier and less hospitable to dust mites and bacteria.

Tencel is produced in a closed-loop process using a non-toxic solvent, resulting in exceptionally clean finished fiber with minimal chemical residues. Organic cotton sheets certified to GOTS are also very clean but may still carry traces of processing chemicals depending on the finishing methods used. Conventional (non-organic) cotton sheets can contain formaldehyde, chlorine bleach residues, and optical brighteners.

For temperature regulation, Tencel has a slight edge due to its moisture-wicking properties, which help prevent overheating. Cotton is more widely available and more affordable. Both are fully biodegradable and shed only natural fibers. The healthiest choice between them depends on personal comfort preference, but either is far superior to synthetic microfiber or polyester sheets. ONDU offers both Tencel and organic cotton bedding options.
