What are the benefits of merino wool?

Merino wool offers a combination of performance benefits that no single synthetic fiber can replicate. Its most celebrated property is natural odor resistance — the lanolin and fiber structure of merino actively inhibit bacterial growth, meaning garments stay fresh for multiple wears without washing. This alone reduces water consumption, energy use, and wear-and-tear on your clothes over their lifetime.

Temperature regulation is another standout benefit. Merino fibers respond dynamically to your body heat and the surrounding environment, insulating when it is cold and releasing heat when it is warm. This makes merino ideal for activities with variable intensity, like hiking or outdoor training. Merino also manages moisture exceptionally well, absorbing vapor from your skin and releasing it into the air, so you stay dry without that clammy feeling that synthetics can cause.

Additional benefits include natural UV protection (merino blocks a significant portion of harmful UV rays), inherent fire resistance (it is self-extinguishing and does not melt like synthetics), and complete biodegradability at end of life. For people with sensitive skin, merino's smooth, fine fibers sit comfortably against the body without irritation. Icebreaker's merino activewear on ONDU demonstrates all of these benefits across leggings, tops, and base layers designed for both high-output training and everyday wear.
