How do I wash silk garments and accessories?
Silk is a delicate protein fiber that requires gentle handling to maintain its luster and strength. The safest method is hand washing in cool water with a pH-neutral detergent specifically formulated for silk or delicates. Submerge the garment, gently agitate it for a minute or two, then rinse thoroughly in cool water. Never wring or twist silk, as the fibers are weakest when wet and can tear or permanently distort.
If hand washing is not practical, many modern silk garments can be machine washed on the most delicate cycle in a mesh laundry bag. Use cold water, a gentle detergent, and skip the spin cycle or use the lowest spin setting. Always check the care label first, as some silk weaves and finishes may be dry-clean only. Avoid bleach, hot water, and any detergent containing enzymes, as these will degrade silk proteins.
For drying, lay silk items flat on a clean towel, roll the towel gently to absorb excess moisture, then unroll and let the garment air dry away from direct sunlight and heat sources. UV light can fade silk colors and weaken the fibers. If ironing is needed, use a low heat setting on the reverse side while the fabric is still slightly damp. Brands like Promeed that specialize in silk products often include detailed care instructions with their items.
