How should I wash organic cotton clothing?
Organic cotton is one of the most forgiving natural fibers to care for, but a few best practices will keep it looking new for longer. Wash organic cotton in cold or warm water on a normal or gentle cycle. Cold water is always the safer choice as it prevents shrinkage, preserves color, and uses less energy. Use a plant-based or mild detergent free of optical brighteners and synthetic fragrances, which can leave residue on the fibers and irritate sensitive skin.
For colored organic cotton garments, wash with like colors and turn items inside out to reduce fading from friction. Avoid bleach entirely, as it weakens cotton fibers and can cause yellowing on white garments over time. If you need to brighten whites, try adding a half cup of baking soda or white vinegar to the wash instead. Pre-treat stains promptly with a natural stain remover rather than letting them set.
Organic cotton can be tumble dried on low heat, but air drying is always preferable for maximizing garment life. Remove items from the dryer while slightly damp and smooth or fold them to minimize wrinkles. Brands like Mate the Label, Organic Basics, and Tentree use high-quality organic cotton that responds well to these simple care practices and gets softer with each wash.
