How can I identify plastic-based fabrics in clothing?
Plastic-based fabrics are more common than most people realize. The most prevalent synthetic fibers are polyester, nylon (polyamide), acrylic, and spandex (also called elastane or Lycra). These are all derived from petroleum and are essentially forms of plastic woven into thread. If you see any of these names on a garment label, the item contains plastic. Polyester alone accounts for over half of all fiber produced globally.
Some names are less obvious. Recycled polyester is still polyester and still sheds microplastics. Fleece, microfiber, and performance mesh are almost always polyester or nylon. Terms like moisture-wicking, quick-dry, and wrinkle-free often indicate synthetic composition. Even fabrics marketed as eco-friendly may contain a synthetic base blended with a small percentage of natural fiber.
At ONDU, we make identification easy by flagging the full fiber breakdown on every product listing. Our curation process filters out garments that rely heavily on synthetics, so you can browse knowing that what you find is made primarily from natural or responsibly sourced plant-based fibers.
