How do I care for merino wool clothing?
Merino wool is remarkably low-maintenance despite its premium feel. The most important rule is to wash it infrequently. Merino's natural lanolin coating resists odor, bacteria, and staining, so most garments only need washing every five to ten wears. Between washes, simply hang your merino piece in fresh air for a few hours and any odors will dissipate naturally.
When washing is needed, use cold water on a wool or delicate cycle with a gentle, wool-specific detergent like Eucalan or Soak. Avoid regular detergent, bleach, and fabric softener, as these can strip the natural lanolin and damage the fibers. Turn garments inside out, and if possible, place them in a mesh laundry bag for extra protection. Never wring merino wool, as this can distort the fibers and cause permanent misshaping.
For drying, lay merino garments flat on a clean towel and reshape them gently while damp. Never hang merino wool to dry as the weight of the water can stretch the fabric. Avoid tumble drying and direct heat or sunlight. With proper care, merino wool garments from brands like Icebreaker and Reprise Activewear can last for many years while retaining their softness and performance properties.
