Does Tencel fabric shrink?
Tencel (lyocell) is one of the most dimensionally stable natural-origin fibers available, and it resists shrinkage much better than cotton or wool. Under normal washing conditions with cold water and a gentle cycle, Tencel shrinkage is minimal, typically less than 2-3%. Most high-quality Tencel garments are pre-shrunk during manufacturing, which further reduces any shrinkage you might experience at home.
The primary risk factor for Tencel shrinkage is heat. High-temperature washing and tumble drying on a hot setting can cause more noticeable shrinkage, as heat relaxes the fibers and allows them to contract. To keep shrinkage to an absolute minimum, wash in cold water and air dry. If you use a dryer, select the lowest heat setting and remove the garment while still slightly damp.
Tencel blends may behave differently depending on the other fibers in the mix. A Tencel-cotton blend might shrink more than pure Tencel because cotton is more prone to shrinkage. A Tencel-merino blend may have intermediate shrinkage characteristics. Always check the care label for blend-specific instructions. Brands like Organic Basics and Pangaia that work extensively with Tencel provide detailed care guidance for each product.
